Researchers often have to compete for funding from federal or state governments, agencies, or universities. Only a small proportion of proposals get funded, the odds are generally <10% (or <5% for grants from the National Science Foundation). I was extraordinarily lucky to have my NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant funded (and even luckier to have it go through on the first try). I have posted it here for anyone who is curious. If you’re not an academic, hopefully this helps understand the research process. If you’re a graduate student, hopefully this can provide you with a template for writing your own DDIG. I know I benefited greatly from finding and reading an example of a successful DDIG, so the more examples that are publicly available the better.
